The Town of Szolnok of County Ranking is the seat of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County, forming one of the biggest settlements in the North-Alföld Region and functioning as an economic, transport, military, cultural, educational, and health-care centre.
Lying only 95 km from the capital, Budapest, it can be reached on main road E 60 in one hour’s drive, its rail connections to the capital and other major towns in the Alföld are excellent and, due to its central geographical location, it can be reached from any of them within one, one-and-a-half hours.
The town of Szolnok lies in the heart of the Alföld, at the confluence of the Tisza and Zagyva Rivers and boasts a history of almost a thousand years. Capitalising on its very favourable geographical location and successfully preserving and following its centuries-old traditions it has been able to keep its central role in the region even in recent years. One of its most important endeavours is to secure economic development for the region.
As county seat it aspires to enter on a dynamic development path fulfilling the functions of a commercial, transit transport, industrial, and financial service centre, preserving and strengthening at the same time its exesting role as a special regional centre in the Alföld. This development is assisted by the proximity of main road E 60, the planned construction of motorways M4-M8, the domestic and international railway lines ensuring north-south and east-west connections, supplemented by a major passenger and freight railway centre as well as the formation and operation of the Szolnok Industrial Estate and the Szolnok Logistics Centre, the provision of new commercial and financial services and the development of high standard health and special event tourism.
